The World News Event
The book, theoretical basis for nursing, describes the theories associated with nursing and illustrates the application of the theories in nursing practices. The course will cover aspects of nursing theories and their applications. The theories of grand nursing theories and middle-range theories are addressed in the course context. The course also focuses on future issues of nursing theories. This assignment presents examples of the aspects that I have found to be most and least interesting after reviewing the coursebook and materials. The assignment also presents a reflection on a real-world event.
Most Interesting Items
The key areas of interest in the book are the overview of the grand theories in nursing and future issues in nursing theories.
Grand nursing theories.
The sixth and seventh chapters focus on the grand theories in nursing and present various insights on grand nursing theories based on human needs, interactive processes, and unitary processes. The grand theories constitute complex concepts that are not operationally defined and describe very comprehensive aspects of human experience and response (McEwen & Wills, 2014). For any profession to be legal and legitimate, it must be able to construct and apply theories (McCrae, 2011). The overview of theories and general information on nursing theories builds a foundation for the application of the theories in various nursing practices.
The chapters are important since they provide foundational knowledge on nursing practices and a broad analysis of nursing phenomena. Obtaining knowledge on theory-based practices in nursing has made nursing perceptions to be more meaningful and significant by transferring nursing’s focus from vocation to an organized profession. Grand theories refer to clients as mechanistic beings, and when the right information is gathered, the cause of their problems can be measured (McEwen & Wills, 2014).
Future issues in nursing theories.
The twenty-first chapter focuses on the issues that may affect nursing theories in the future. Nursing is observed as a discipline of transition. Nurses are taking on more comprehensive roles in health care leadership and patient outcomes as the complexity and acuity of patients increase (Josephsen, 2014). The wide range of major problems is increasing and must be addressed equally. The nurses of the future must be equipped and capable of promoting high-quality healthcare outcomes (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Planning for healthcare services such as cost-effective health care and improved quality of life for an improved aging population is of importance, and the nurses should give increasing interest in certain theories to achieve the goals. The nurses should be able to critique, evaluate, and use theory. The nurses should be able to learn and apply a wide range of theories from nursing and other sciences in a comprehensive approach to care (McEwen & Wills, 2014). The nurses should also apply the critical and analytical thinking skills to survive in the highly complex and rapidly changing health care system.
Least Interesting Items
The least areas of interest are the applications of the nursing theories in education, management and administration, and research in nursing. The Middle-Range nursing theories are also least areas of interest.
Application of nursing theories in various fields
Chapters 17 to 19 of the course text focus on application of nursing theories in different field (McEwen & Wills, 2014). The application of nursing theories depends on the knowledge of the theories. The health care systems such as the Magnet Recognition Plan are changing the modern world. The Magnet Recognition Plan creates space for fresh and increased thinking on theoretical foundations for nursing. Therefore, theories eventually change depending on the healthcare system at hand, and the nurse professionals are required to have capacity thinking and right decision-making procedures in order to apply the theories in the right way (McCrae, 2011). However, this concept is least interesting since theories have been applied across different fields.
Middle range nursing theories.
Chapters 10 to 14 of the coursebook introduce the middle-range nursing theories that are based on sociological sciences, behavioural sciences and biomedical sciences (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Nursing theories have been used to narrow the gap between nursing science theories and practice (Elo, Kaariainen, Isola, & Kyngas, 2013). The Middle-range theories contain fewer concepts and are developed using either a deductive approach or an inductive approach, unlike complex theories which are measurable. The middle-range theories are not able to deeply identify research on human dimensions such as sociological needs and improved through qualitative research (Bahramnezhad, Shiri, Asgari, & Afshar, 2015). The middle range theories include the concepts such as concepts on uncertainty in illness, unpleasant symptoms and peaceful end of life and cultural brokering among others (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Thus, the Middle-range theories describe the average concepts of nursing, person, health and environment and explain the specific concrete actions in medical administration, teaching, and fall prevention.
The Real World Event
The Affordable Care Act was introduced into the law by President Barrack Obama on March 23, 2010. The law indicated the victory for democrats who struggled to pass such legislation for decades. The supporters of the law described it as an opportunity for expanding availability and affordability for healthcare. The opponents of the Affordable Care Act introduced by President Obama referred to it as Obama care. The Affordable Care Act required the insurers to cover ten essential health benefits where some of the benefits were offered freely. The benefits included the processes of contraception and smoking cessation equipment which were approved by the Food and Drug Administration and also breast pumps for the new mothers (U.S. News & World Report, 2015). The Affordable Care Act assists patients to pay minimized medical bills and access over the counter medicine at an effective cost. The law also protects the American people from high medical bills where the insurance premiums are retrieved directly from paychecks instead of individuals paying the premiums privately. The Affordable Care Act helps smokers to quit smoking whereby insurers allow smokers to access medications and therapy (U.S. News & World Report, 2015). This event is related to the course since we will learn about nursing leadership theories. According to Josephsen (2014), nurses are getting more involved in leadership in the healthcare system. One key role of leaders in the establishment of policies that improve health care. Nursing theories can, therefore, play a significant role in guiding policy formulation and the participation of nurses in the policy formulation process.
